6. Looking back at your Preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
How does your media product represent particular social groups and who would be the audience for your media product?
We tried to broaden our social groups in which our media product would represent. We did this through a range of ideas. Our news that we broadcasted was mainly sport and celebrity gossip, however, we did include some international and local news too. This would interest a range of social groups. Through the presenters, we included humor to make the listeners feel at ease when they are listening to 'Vox Radio'.
We tried to aim our radio station at a younger audience, mainly between the ages of 15 - 30. We did this through our name of the radio station 'Vox Radio'. Just by hearing this name, you can tell that it is for a younger audience. We also did this through the presenters talking in an informal tone - if someone made a mistake then they would joke about it and try and make the listeners laugh, this would be relevant for a young audience.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Our five minute radio clip would be distributed by a local radio station. It has many of the same aspects as local radio stations that I analysed such as 'Heart FM'. The news mentioned on Heart FM was related to celebrities and local news. We tried to imitate this by doing the same types of news as well as international news. The local news headline that they used was about a man in oxford getting stabbed. We informed the new updates on what is happening with the student fee's. These stories both affect Oxfordshire.
We did a sports update, this was to encourage men to listen to our radio station. Heart did not include this. I think this is because they have to cut out some types of news in their shows so they can stick to a particular timed schedule.
We also included weather and travel updates to inform the listeners in the local area. This is one of the main expectations of a local radio station. This would encourage a media institution to distribute our media product.
How did you attract/ address your audience?
At the beginning of the show, the presenters informed the audience what would be coming up in the show by directly talking to them. This addresses them and this makes them feel obligated to stay. To attract the audience, the presenters spoke in an exciting tone, because we were hoping by doing this it would excite the audience so they would continue listening. To make the audience feel at ease, we all used a casual and friendly tone so everyone can feel like they can listen to our radio station whilst feeling relaxed. When writing the script for our radio piece, we tried to only say things that will interest the listener. For example, when doing the news, we cut out the less important information and just kept it quick and basic. This is so the listeners don't get bored.
I think that if I had to redo this project; then I would do a questionnaire on what people like to hear from radio stations, and then ask my family and friends to complete it. We would also plan our main piece out more efficiently. This way we would of had time to include the surprise guest in our radio show that in the end we didn't have time to record.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Throughout the preliminary task and our final piece we used the same software to record. We used 'garageband'. The reason why we did this is because it worked so well for the preliminary, so we thought it was only best to use it for our main task. It was very easy to use and we found it easy to go back and edit as we were constantly changing our product. We could move parts of speech into different places in the piece until we were happy with the order. This helped a great deal, as this took the pressure off us recording everything perfectly in the right order. This overall helped with making the product as good as it could be.This did teach me that if we were had to do this task again, we should practise the script more so we didn't have to do so much editing whilst in the recording process.
The software had many choices of sound effects that we could use in our product. For example, our jingle. This made our radio product sound realistic, and like the other radio stations that we have listened to and evaluated. Making our jingle on this software was made to be very easy and successful. However, we did have to practise with a few at first until we found one that sounded right for 'Vox Radio'.
Recording on this software was sometimes difficult. As our group used several different microphones it took a lot of time to make sure we were all talking at the same volume. We didn't get this perfect, this was because some of our individual voices were quieter that others.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
We learnt many things whilst doing the preliminary task. In the main task we learnt to stick to a written script so it was more structured - even though the presenters made a few mistakes, but that's what made it sound like a real radio station. Also, in the main task we were more familiar with the software and we were able to use a greater deal of it. This improved our radio piece as it made it sound more professional.
Our preliminary task taught us what we needed to do to improve to make our main task sound as good as it could be. If we had more time to complete this task we would spend more time planning the recording so we could of included an interview with the surprise guest, and we would increase the use of editing.

Local Radio Research
Heart FM -
Catchphrases -
Heart FM's central catchphrase is 'more music variety'. They repeatedly play this so we can associate the catchphrase with the radio station. It indicates that they play a wide variety of music. The catchphrase 'the soundtrack to your life..' is played between almost every song. This is suggesting that the music that is being played relates to everyone in some way.
Another catchphrase that is repeatedly used is 'the time tunnel'. This is telling the audience that the music that will be played will be from many different eras. These catchphrases are used to attract the audience and to make the radio station memorable.
Music -
Songs that were played are around five - ten years old; this implies that the songs are aimed at a middle age audience, between the ages of twenty five - forty five. This could be because of the time of day that I analysed this radio station. It was in the middle of a week day, so it was most likely that the younger people would be at school or college.
Advertisements-
The advertisements were aimed at a slightly older audience, people between the ages of thirty - fifty. They relate to people with families or that live with a partner that have quite a lot of money, as the things that were being advertised aren't cheap. For example, AG kitchens. These particular advertisements are played because these are the people that are most likely to be listening and taking notice of the advertisements that are played throughout a radio show.
News broadcast at 3pm -
The news broadcast lasted approximately three minutes.
The first headline was 'a man stabbed in Oxford last Thursday, twenty seven year old charged'. This will catch the audiences attention as it is shocking headline. It informs the audience about what has been happening in their local area and it also reminds people to be aware and stay safe.
The second headline was 'Region's water supplier Thames Water to raise rates'. This is aimed at an older audience as it is those that will be affected by this, not people of a younger age group. This headline is to inform the audience.
The third and forth headlines are 'Kate Moss attends St Paul's tribute to Alexander McQueen' and 'Myleen Klass announces on Twitter she is expected her second child'. These headlines aren't as important as the other ones, that's why they are played last. This news is celebrity gossip. This is included in their news broadcast to attract a younger audience to listen to the news.
To end the news headlines, the weather is told. This information to inform the audience. This is a very important piece of information to be broadcasted as it is one of the expectations of a local radio news broadcast. Without it, people may be detracted from listening to the radio station.
Right at the start and at the end of the news broadcast, a jingle is played. This is to lighten the tone of the broadcast.
Connecting to the listener -
The presenter happily accepts calls, e-mails, texts etc. He reads some out on the show. This builds a healthy, friendly relationship between the presenter and the listeners.
Promoting other shows -
'Remember to tune in tomorrow morning for our breakfast show with Toby Anstis'. This is to persuade the audience to repeatedly tune in to Heart FM. It also informs the audience about other shows.
Positives about the radio broadcast -
Negatives about the radio broadcast -
Jack FM -
Catchphrases -
'Playing what we want' is Jack FM's most used catchphrase throughout their radio shows. It is played between almost every song. It indicates that they will play the music that we all want, this may grab the listeners attention. A jingle is played in the background, making it clear that it is a music show and making Jack FM memorable.
Music -
I noticed that the music on Jack FM varies more than Heart FM. Some songs that they played are aimed at a younger audience, such as new music that is in the charts now. However, music that is quite a few years old is also played a lot more on Jack FM than Heart FM. This is so the radio station pleases all ages.
Advertisements -
The advertisements played were very similar to Heart FM. They are mainly aimed at older, wealthier people. This is because of again; the time that I tuned into Jack FM, the middle of a week day.
News broadcast at 1pm -
This news broadcast also lasted approximately three minutes.
The first headline was 'Pupils sent home due to school heating fault'. This also informs the audience about what has been happening in their local area. This particular headline is likely to interest families with children because it is about a primary school. The second headline is '7.4 quake hits Japan'. This type of news is national news, which is something Heart FM did not include in their news broadcast. This headline is to shock the audience, which will achieve their full attention. It is also to inform.
Instead of including celebrity news like Heart FM, they included a sports headline. 'Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy takes the clubhouse lead with sixty five at the Masters'. This is included to attract a younger audience and also a male audience. This broadens the listeners of Jack FM.
To end the news headline, the weather is told. This is broadcasted for the same reason as it is broadcasted on Heart FM.
Right at the start and the end of the news broadcast, a jingle is played exactly like on Heart FM.
Connecting to the listener -
The presenter also accepts calls, texts, e-mails etc. from the audience but not as regulary as Heart FM. I think this is because Jack FM is aimed at an older age group than Heart FM, so the audience doesn't feel the need to get involved as often.
Promoting other shows -
'Tune in every sunday morning from 9am with Caroline for Jack FM's Sunday Roast'. This not only informs the audience about other shows but it also persuades them to listen to them on Jack FM
Positives about the radio broadcast -
Negatives about the radio broadcast -
How this helped me towards my radio clip -
Listening and analysing two local radio stations helped me in many ways towards making my own local radio clip.
The task let me know what I have to include to make my radio clip a successful piece of coursework. For example, what type of news to include during the hourly radio broadcast. Through this I knew that we need to do news research about what's going on locally and nationally. I learnt that the presenters need to have a open, friendly tone to thier voices to attract the audience, and if they did make a mistake, to turn it into a joke to make the audience feel at ease. I learnt that we need to time plan. To plan our radio clip effectively, we need to make sure there is an even amount of time used on each part of the show. This is so the listeners do not get bored. In doing so, we need to produce a script.
How I contributed to the planning of my radio clip -
This piece of coursework took many hours to prepare. We all did background research which included listening to local radio stations and analysing them to get ideas for our own radio clip. I analysed Heart FM and Jack FM.
We did a preliminary exercise, to practise recording. This showed us what worked well and what didn't. Whilst doing the preliminary we decided that in the final piece, I am going to present the weather. So in the preliminary, I told the listeners that the weather is coming up in the show. We all decided that the two presenters in this exercise are going to be the two people with the most confidence, because this would make our finished product sound as good as we could make it.
For our preliminary task and main piece, we all wrote the script together. This is because this way we could all interpret our own ideas and everyone would be happy with the structure of our product. I wrote my piece, which was the weather. I made the presentation of the weather light-hearted and talking directly back to the presenters, which made it a converrsation. This way it was an easy and relaxing listen for our audience. Having a script worked out very well and it was very important because it made the recording part run smoothly. It also helped with keeping to the set time limit.
After recording both pieces, we had to do the editing of our main piece. We all decided on a jingle that sounded like it fits best with 'Vox Radio'. We added special effects to certain parts of our main piece, this way our product sounded professional. We thought it would be the best idea if we all did this too, because we all had many ideas that needed sharing.
Overall, I contributed a lot to the planning and research. I tried my hardest to put lots of time and effort into it so it sounded as professional as possible.

Positives about the radio broadcast -
- Even amount of music and adverts. This way audience doesn't get bored.
- In the news broadcast, there were different types of news. Local and celebrity gossip.
- Promotes other shows to be broadcasted on Heart FM.
Negatives about the radio broadcast -
- Presenter sometimes talks very fast trying to deliver a lot of information to audience, people may stop paying their full attention.
- Haven't selected any new music to play, audience may want to hear new things in the charts at the present moment.
- News broadcast lacked national news.
Jack FM -

Positives about the radio broadcast -
- News broadcast included national news, Heart FM did not include this.
- Wide range of songs played.
- One main catchphrase so audience can learn to link one particular phrase with Jack FM.
Negatives about the radio broadcast -
- Presenters don't interact and connect with the audience as much as they could.
- Presenter has a habbitt of rasing his voice on a regular occasion during the show, may detract audience from listening.
